Membership in COTAPSA is voluntary. We recognize that some people have strongly held personal opinions regarding staff management associations. These opinions can lead to reluctance on the part of individuals  to join any organization/association to represent their interests.  COTAPSA's experience is that when these types of individuals join, they soon realize the benefits of membership.  

What is unfortunate for a number of new Members are the circumstances surrounding their joining of COTAPSA. In many instances, non-members find themselves in a situation where they require our assistance. Accordingly, they either find COTAPSA on their own or are referred by a colleague who is already a Member. Regrettably, in some of these situations, had the individual already been a Member, the problem could have been dealt with early, before escalating. Instead, they only contact us when the problem has escalated past a simple solution. Had they joined and been a member earlier, before they needed COTAPSA, it may have been easy to resovle the situation.

In our view, and that of our Members, Membership in COTAPSA needs to be considered and done “before you need us”. Through ongoing consultation, we are often able to deal with an issue before it becomes serious. By contacting COTAPSA at a final stage (such as upon suspension, sanction or termination), our options are limited, as opposed to being informed of an incident well before management has reacted.

COTAPSA recognizes and respects the fact that some people have mixed feelings regarding staff Associations. All we ask of people is to consider the benefits of membership and the advantages to having COTAPSA on your side before you need us.
